Babies at the Dentist – No Kidding!

The American Dental Association recommends that children visit the dentist as soon as his or her first tooth appears or by his or her first birthday. Not only will this visit give the dentist a chance to check for tooth decay, but also it’s a chance for a parent to discuss other concerns, such as thumb sucking or pacifiers, and how they will affect baby teeth and permanent teeth later in life.

Tooth brushing is always important—even when you only have one tooth! Parents should brush their babies’ tooth (or teeth!) with a toothbrush designed for children.  Use a fluoride-containing toothpaste, but use only an amount the size of a grain of rice! Using the right amount will prevent undesirable stains on the teeth and even more undesirable cavities.  It is crucial as babies grow into toddlers to remind them that though toothpaste may be tasty, it is not candy, and should not be used for anything other than keeping his or her teeth healthy.
